TASK: Design a hand piece that would allow easy control of light output and provide a means to filter out all the UV components of the light source, allowing it to be used with UV activated dental materials. Provide an interconnect with the vacuum hoses and fiber optic cable that could be taken apart and reassembled without the transfer of saliva to the optics. Finally, fit these components into a lightweight, ergonomic design that could be easily disassembled.

SOLUTION: Working closely with Isolite personnel, we developed an IDSA Gold award-winning product that meets all the design goals. Fitting easily into the dentist's hand and lightweight enough to prevent patient discomfort, all adjustments are made with intuitive controls.
